Tarlabaşı vs Government = Gentrification

Government tries to gentrificate Tarlabaşı nowadays. Buildings are bought from their owners to rebuild. Some people that live in Tarlabaşı are worried about this. But, some people want gentrification to be done.

Tarlabaşı is know for prostitution, drug selling, theft and grab. Prostitutes can be seen on the street at nights. All types of drug can be found there. After 08:00 PM, Tarlabaşı becomes a much more dangerous place than in the morning. When you talk to a person who lives there, that person can show people to you and tell what those people do.

Nuri Yazıcı, 33, Hardwareman, says, “We aren't wanted here.”

Tarlabaşı will become a tourist place after gentrification. Government buys buildings in Tarlabaşı one by one. Tarlabaşı is next to Beyoğlu. So, people who come to see Beyoğlu can come to tarlabaşı as well. But, if Tarlabaşı becomes a tourist place, people who live there lose their jobs and homes.

Nuri Yazıcı, 33, Hardwareman, says, “After gentrification, I'll have a job loss because there is no need a hardwareman in a tourist place.”

Murat Bircan, 26, Barber, says, “It will be great for us that tourists come here. Also, It will be great artisans here as well.”

Maybe, illegal works don't end. But, They will decrease seriously. A lot of people don't even think of going Tarlabaşı because they are afraid. Even some people who live there are unhappy because of illegal works.

Nuri Yazıcı, 33, Hardwareman, says, “There are some university students who come from Marmara university to buy drug.”

Murat Bircan, 26, Barber, says, “I saw that a lot of people who came from outside are raped and usurped with my own eyes.”

Government benefit from people in Tarlabaşı for its own gain. The population there, especially poor people will have to leave tarlabaşı because they can't afford the rents after gentrification. Then, places where poor people have to leave will be sold to rich people with high prices. Besides, there is number 5366 law. It was prepared for only Tarlabaşı. According to this law, you have to sell your property in the price that government wants to buy.

Salih Yazıcı, 29, Hardwareman, says, “It's not for us, it's for rich people.”

Salih Yazıcı, 29, Hardwareman, says, “We wanted 50% share from new buildings that will be built. But, we couldn't have it accepted. Then, number 5366 law was made and we were told that we had to sell our places to them. However, we didn't accept it, either. We went to law with the government.”

People can't go to Tarlabaşı and are afraid. But, after gentrification, everyone will be able to go there easily. That's quite clear. Some people agree with this opinion, some people don't. Moreover, most people who lives there want illegal works in Tarlabaşı to be stopped.

Murat Bircan, 26, Barber, says, “Tarlabaşı will become better than Kadıköy after gentrification.”
